【金子凼】Life Style Choices Can Prevent Chronic Disease

On September 29, I listened to a free online event hosted by MGH about healthy habits. As I was alone at home listening to the free online event, I could not be completely focused on the event. While listening to the Q&A online, I was moving around doing housework too. Therefore, after finishing the over 40 minutes long event, I only caught and remembered a few new concepts and platitudes that I was naturally interested in.

One week later, after two rainy days on Monday and Tuesday, the warm and sunny morning on Wednesday looked so pleasant and tempting, so after I got my flu vaccine at Brandeis University’s vaccine clinic, I sat on the grass field of the campus to enjoy the sun. While staring at the peaceful green grassy field in front of me, I thought of the free online event from a week ago and the tone of medical experts answering questions as well as the knowledge they shared over the internet was still vivid. I heard a doctor in his early 30s said in a confident tone: “Years of scientific research has shown that one’s lifestyle can prevent hypertension, obesity and Alzheimer’s disease.” I immediately heard and remembered this, because my mother’s amnesia in her late 80′s made me have a lingering fear of Alzheimer’s disease. It is my gospel that good lifestyle choices can prevent Alzheimer’s disease. I now fell like I have better control of my own destiny as I believe that the young doctor’s idea that one’s lifestyle can affect health must be supported by the latest authoritative theories.

When answering what specific lifestyles can prevent these common chronic diseases, I heard the old saying: ensure the quality of sleep, exercise more, have an active social life, become a pet owner, and develop healthy eating habits… It has been found from years of health research in many countries and many races that the simplest healthy eating habit is “Putting More Plants on your Plate”……

As for dieting, experts believe that eating should be a kind of enjoyment. Don’t give up your favorite food because of dieting… I always believe eating is a kind of enjoyment, the experts’ echoing let me enjoy the pleasure of “think alike” alone and quietly .

Nowadays, mobile devices have blurred the boundary between work and home life, which may change some of the longtime healthy habits we once had, such as eating each meal on time, paying attention to food while eating, and cooking your own food often. Millennials and Generation Z who just entering the working force will probably be more impacted than previous generations. Hope the knowledge that “Lifestyle choices can prevent chronic disease” becomes well known among youngsters too.
