10-30-2022, Sunday, sunny

Boston was sunny at the end of October. I visited Rachel, my friend in Waltham, at her home and commented on how her twin boy and girl are much taller now. Rachel smiled: “Soon I will be the shortest one in my family.”

We were very happy to see each other after I moved to California. We chatted about my life in San Jose, California and her life in Waltham, Massachusetts. Rachel talked about her full-time teaching career at a middle school. She is teaching three courses this semester: interior design, preschool education, and sewing. In addition, she is taking a college course on weekends to earn credits for her teacher’s license in Massachusetts.

I thought interior design is a college course. Hearing Rachel teach this course at a middle school, I asked curiously, “I thought interior design is a college course. How do you teach middle school students interior design?”

Rachel explained to me that the basic elements of interior design are: space utilization, light utilization, color matching, and overall pattern and texture coordination. In her class of interior design for middle school students, she broke each element into a unit. In the space unit, she talks about one, two and three dimensional space utilization, then ask her students to complete an assignment to show their understanding and use of space. After finishing all the units, her students will present a room designed by themselves.

I asked her about how they could present a room in class.

Rachel said her students will present a virtual room, not a physical room, online.”

Rachel also said, “Our school has many students who just immigrated from Brazil. Because of the shortage of ESL (English as a second language) teachers, our school offered limited ESL classes. The Brazilian students who can’t attend the ESL classes have to stay in the student cafe.”

I asked Rachel curiously: “What classes can the Brazilian students take without the ESL teachers?”

Rachel said: “They can take classes that don’t require profound English language skill, such as interior design and sewing classes. In interior design classes, I purposely wrote down important Portuguese corresponding to English in the lecture notes and assignment requirements to help my Brazilian students learn well in the classroom and to do their assignments faster and better.”

I exclaimed: “Before you knew it, you already started the bilingual course of interior design class and became a ESL interior design teacher, very creative!”

Rachel said that she asked the students in the sewing class to make bibs for the kindergarteners and she was impressed by a Chinese girl who followed the instruction and made good bibs very quickly.

I always enjoy chatting with Rachel and listening to the vivid stories of her unique experiences along with her observations and her creativities. Rachel was very busy and she looked very energetic and happy. We took a photo together happily before I left.

05-16-2021, Sunday
Today, a garden recital, planned by my daughter and her friends successfully took place in Rachel and Carey’s back yard!

The COVID-19 pandemic has lasted for more than a year now, so conventional social gatherings have also stopped for more than a year.

In the middle of May, the weather is getting warmer but not hot, and the school spring semester will soon be finished, well-respected Professor W commented about the more than 2-hour long gathering celebrating his retirement as “the most pleasant surprise” this year. These words, the time, and the weather stirred a longing for a gathering among my daughter’s friends, including the retired professors. Everyone was enthusiastic for a recital. Professor A prepared an opening speech for the recital, Professor W will bring his own sound system and saxophone to play, Grace and Shirah practiced together for a piano and vocal piece.

Due to COVID-19, the originally planned indoor recital moved outdoors, in Rachel and Carey’s backyard, and it is called “A Garden Recital”. Rachel invested lots of time and resources on this garden recital by planting many flowers in their backyard. My daughter bought a big tent, as the weather forecast predicted rain on Sunday afternoon. Rachel prepared cheese, fruits salad, and baked cakes ahead of time. She also bought a few 2-Tier or 3-tier cake stand fruit plates.

At noon on Sunday, Alex, Carey and I set up the tent in Rachel and Carey’s backyard. Their four children brought the food, drink, and utensils to the garden and set up the chairs too. Grace and Lou brought their electronic piano from home. Shirah brought home-made self wrapped sweets too. A few of us were busy working from noon to 2:00 pm to stage the backyard for a garden recital of sixteen attendants. This preparation experience helped me realize that the hostess who is hosting a family garden recital is indeed a warm-hearted capable organizer. Thanks Rachel!

The early summer family garden recital was very successful. Professor A’s opening speech was focused on his research area, Grace played the piano, Shirah sang a few Italian and German opera songs, some with Grace playing piano, some just by herself. Rachel and Carey’s twin played the instruments that they will be playing in their school concerts soon. Professor W. brought his own sound system and played a few pieces of music on his saxophone. After the garden recital, we all enjoyed the delicious food prepared by Rachel, chatted about little episodes with keeping social distance during this pandemic, and little stories of family members.

Today, Rachel showed me the new additions to her garden, I learned that a white flower is called bleeding heart and wondered why a white flower got such a blood name. After the recital, Martha and I enjoyed the beautiful flowers in the garden and she pointed to the bleeding heart and commented: “The shape of this flower is like a heart, a small drop of red from the heart shaped flower, so it looks like the heart is bleeding.”

Little Episodes

At the opening of the garden recital, Professor A gave a speech. Rachel and Carey’s children were sitting outside the tent. Here under the tent sat: Maratha, Professor W and his wife, Lou, Alex, my daughter, Grace, Shirah, Carey, Justin, and Rachel.
12-03-2021，Friday，Sunny and Cold

It’s sunny and cold outside today. Although Thanksgiving has passed by for more than a week, the Thanksgiving flowers are still in bloom in the living room vase. The red rose from the last day of November is still lively in the December dining room. The impatience in the kitchen will bloom again. From the dining room to the living room to the kitchen, the flowers in the vase and the flower buds in the pot make me feel refreshed, because the joy brought by flowers is always a very real sort of energy.

The impatience bud was eye-catching. Watching the red-rose-colored impatience bud gorgeously set off by the green leaves, I remembered the impatience was given to me by Rachel before the cold weather this year after she had transplanted it from her garden to the pot. She told me, “The impatience likes sun so placing it by a window with direct sunlight is good”.

I put the impatience by the window above the kitchen sink after we moved to our new house. The impatience seems to enjoy the new place as soon after it settled down, it started to grow flower buds, in red-rose-colored single-layer flowers which would bloom occasionally. Whenever the impatience is blooming, I always tell Rachel, “the impatience blooms again. It’s beautiful!”, because Rachel cares about the flowers she gave me. I joked with my daughter: “Rachel is one of my favorite people because she likes to send me flowers. She sent me a pot of dahlias in summer and a pot of purple chrysanthemums in autumn. The impatience she gave me in October is so lovely as it is the first flower to bloom after we moved to our new home.”

I always thought the impatience bloomed only in the summer so I was very happy to see it blooming in the winter. The impatience will always remind me of Rachel and our many sweet gatherings in 2021.

In March, we had homemade dessert in her new house.
On Easter Sunday, we hid eggs in her garden and played games together.
In May 16th, we had a Garden Recital to celebrate the end of the 2021 Spring Semester in her garden.
In June, Rachel invited me to attend her twin children’s school concert recital and to celebrate her eldest daughter’s junior high school graduation.
We had my favorite crepes in her home when my son visited us in July. Homemade crepes were so delicious.
In September, she gave me the zucchini grown in her garden and a pot of purple chrysanthemums.
In October, I chatted with her in-laws who came from Seattle to visit her family.
At the end of October, Rachel’s family came to help us with moving.
She made crepes on Thanksgiving Saturday in my house.
In early December, Rachel took time to go shopping with us so we can enjoy her 20% employee discount.

Looking at the impatience quietly, I also remember my childhood past time of smashing the impatience petals and painting them on my fingernails to dye my nails, the impatience was multi-layered on a long stem at that time.

People love flowers, flowers are pleasant. Human love can be nicely passed on via flowers.

Little Episodes

Chinese Version

07-90-2021, Friday, Rain

In the afternoon, my daughter told me: “Rachel invited us to have crepes for dinner tonight.” However, I didn’t realize that crepes were my favorite western sweets. It seems that English, which is not my mother-tongue, needed to take a longer route to reach my memories.

When we arrived at Rachel’s house at six in the afternoon, she and her younger son were practicing cutting skills in the kitchen. She was chopping and dicing apples, and her chopping board was already full of diced apples. D. her younger son, is cutting bananas. A. her eldest one, was looking after the Western sausages on the baking pan.

After Rachel mixed the diced apples with butter, cinnamon powder, and vanilla extract and put them into a non stick pot to cook, I took over the job to stir the diced apples.

We stood side-by-side next to the stove counter top. I stirred the diced apples and enjoyed the smell of cinnamon apples. Rachel skillfully added sugar and water to the frozen blueberries in a pot and stirred the blueberries to make fresh jam.

I asked Rachel curiously, “Are the crepes we’re eating tonight the same dessert you made for us last Thanksgiving?”

“No, the dessert I made last Thanksgiving was called turnovers,” Rachel said.

After the diced apples got soft, I got another job to make scrambled eggs from Rachel. While frying the scrambled egg with 12 eggs, I said, “Wow, I am frying 12 eggs for the first time in my life.”

Rachel laughed when she hears it: “experiencing what it means to be in a big family.”

When Rachel started making crepes, I realized that she was making the Western dessert that I really like. So I felt excited.

While making the crepes, Rachel said: “In my last semester’s cooking class, making crepes was the most popular lesson for my students. For this year’s cooking summer camp, I will also let students make crepes. L and D (my younger daughter and my older son) will also participate in the cooking summer camp. ”

I asked: “What ingredients do you usually use as fillings for crepes?”

“Chocolate, raisins, strawberries, bananas, jam etc.” Rachel said.

There are nine people for today’s crepes dinner, each of us had a big plate. After Rachel put the crepe on the big plate, everyone went to pick their favorite fillings to pile on the crepes to enjoy their own flavor of crepes.

I divided my crepe into two: half was for sweet fillings, as the sweets were freshly made, it tasted very refreshing. The other half was for salty fillings and it was also very satisfying.

Crepes are a Western dessert I like very much. “Enjoying crepes in the United States is always a warm sweet experience for me, because crepes crosses my European, American, and Asian memories.” The first time I tasted crepes was in Germany. Eating crepes always brings back my memory of eating DanHongGao in Sichuan: soft and light sweetness.

After participating in the preparation of crepe fillings at Rachel’s home tonight, and eating Rachel’s homemade crepes, my memory of crepes had the warm feeling of being part of a big family now.

1. Rachel
Rachel
Rachel

1 cup all-purpose flour （一杯面粉）
½ cup milk （半杯牛奶）
½ cup water （半杯水）
¼ teaspoon salt （1/4 茶匙盐）
2 tablespoons butter, melted （2

Chinese Version

01-20-2021

Rachel is Carey’s wife, and Carey is my daughter’s classmate. Rachel and Carey have four children in middle or elementary school and two of their children are girl and boy twins.

Before I met Rachel, I had already heard from my daughter and Grace, my daughter’s other classmate, that Rachel is good at making delicious desserts, because her husband, Carey, brought Rachel’s sweets to the department for everyone to share.

In February 2020, before the COVID-19 quarantine, my daughter invited Grace’s and Carey’s family over to our house for a gathering. I finally met Rachel and tasted her fruit tart, which was both delicious and beautiful. Later the same three families had a gathering in Rachel’s place, and Rachel made a plateful of meat egg rolls. We all liked the tasty egg rolls. Rachel joked: “I made the meat egg rolls to show you that Rachel is not only good at making desserts.” Her humor made us laugh.

Rachel had been a missionary to the Philippines for about a year, so she is familiar with Asians and Asian Culture. I enjoy chatting with Rachel and listening to her funny stories. In one of our conversations, I knew that Rachel underwent a big surgery a few years back. After the surgery, she could only drink liquid food and she had no appetite at all. At that time, her body sometimes suffered unbearable pain and fatigue. While mentioning that difficult time, she said: “I believed in spirit power. As my ancestors came from Scotland, I often listen to Scottish special music during the difficult time after my surgery. I really felt the music gave me strength to recover.” Rachel’s words expressed her strong and cheerful will mixed together let me realize that everyone had suffered or is suffering…But strength will will pull us through. As a result, I admire Rachel’s cheerful and outspoken nature very much.

2020′s COVID-19 made parents stop their children from “Trick or treat”ing door-to-door as usual, which caused the Halloween tradition to lose its beauty. When Rachel invited me to join her family on Halloween to “watch the kids fumble around in the dark”, I was filled with wonder.

Halloween in 2020 is also September 15th in the lunar calendar, that night had a full moon in the sky and snow on the ground, it was indeed a beautify snowy winter night. In the evening, Rachel and her children dressed up in Halloween costumes came out, I walked with them to the woods. In the woods, Rachel passed fully-charged flash lights to her children and told them to use the flashlight to look for plastic bags filled with candies in the woods. Earlier, Rachel prepared the plastic bags filled with candies and hid the bags in the woods, so her children could enjoy candy hunting in the evening because door-to-door “trick or treat” was discouraged in 2020.

Under the full moon, the flashlights shone in the snowy dark woods at random places while the children were hunting for candies, which made for an unforgettable scene. I admired Rachel as a loving, creative, and capable mother, because she had created and directed a unique stage for her children to enjoy harvesting candies in a totally different way for Halloween in 2020.

2020′s quarantine created opportunities for Rachel and I to become good friends.

Little Episodes

The beautiful and tasty dessert made by Rachel (02-19-2020)

(School on break for a week, students on a evening gathering. Finally got a chance to taste chef Rachel’s secret recipe of fruit tart. Beautiful and tasty. I enjoyed the sweetness, which also boosted my immunization.)

Rachel self wrote and directed a stage for candy hunting on Halloween night. Sky and the ground, a unforgettable night.

(Hunting for candy: this year’s Halloween had no “Trick or treat”. A very creative mother planned ahead and hid bags of candies in the woods earlier, so her children could use flashlights to hunt for candies in the dark night. Under the big moon, in the snowy woods, hunting for candies, blaming the pandemic for this. Between the sky and the ground, Rachel made a unforgettable night.)

Rachel邀请我鬼节去看孩子们在黑夜里跌跌闯闯（watch the kids fumble around in the dark)时，我还满是疑问。
